In addition to our main activities consulting, coaching and to give trainings we write books.

Our goal was and is to collect experience from the consulting and coaching business to derive solutions and to make them available to you.

So, we enjoy writing and will continue to provide you with books and publications in the future.

Further more we developed the idea to publish little helpers - broschures and posters - under the motto "Wissen for free" (Wissen = Knowledge). These are available both as PDF and in printed version on high quality paper.

And the best part, as the name suggests, completely free.

Requirements-Engineering und -Management

6th Edition

Chris Rupp & the SOPHISTs

Our book “Requirements-Engineering and Management, which is referred to by many as the RE bible or the core literature for any requirements engineer, is now in its 6th edition. You can expect an extensive textbook with a lot of know-how, insider tips and many enhancements. For a couple of chapters there is additional information on our website.

A requirement analysis is the decisive factor for the success of the project or product. It takes a central position in the system development. This book describes the process of gathering requirements on systems and managing their constant change. It provides strategies, clear concepts and tips for a pragmatic implementation. A lot of expert boxes, examples, templates and checklists secure the know-how transfer into your projects.

The new topics include requirements engineering in an agile environment, agile documentation forms, user stories and how to slice them and special cases such as delta requirements and usability engineering. A continuous example with an own framework story and a chapter to chapter instruction for a requirements engineering guide will accompany you through the book chapters.

Please note that not the entire book is available in English. A couple of chapters are translated in English. If you are interested in the chapters, please write a mail at heureka[at]sophist[dot]de.

Basiswissen Requirements Engineering

4th Edition

Chris Rupp & Dr. Klaus Pohl

Education and training for the Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering - Foundation Level according to the IREB standard

For anyone who is about to prepare for the Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering certification or just wants to increase their existing requirements engineering knowledge will receive support from the textbook of IREB e.V.

Co-written by Chris Rupp and Dr Klaus Pohl, with the support of their IREB colleagues, the book aims to cover all relevant content for the examination and to present it in concrete terms. With the textbook an independent preparation is possible. However, it can also be used as an accompaniment to one of the training courses offered by a training provider. You are probably not surprised that we still recommend a competent training by a training provider such as SOPHIST ;-).

Please note that there are some important changes in the 4th edition compared to the 3rd edition.

These changes have been made as IREB e.V. has made some updates in the curriculum of the Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering - Foundation Level.

Thus, the 4th edition reflects the content of the current curriculum of the IREB CPRE-FL.

  • General description of the book

In 2007, the International Requirements Engineering Board (IREB e.V.) was founded. It is composed of independent, globally recognized experts in the fields of industry, consulting, research and education. The members of the board have worked out a curriculum for requirements engineering and developed a certificate based on it – the "Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering" (CPRE).

The goal is a quality-assured standardization of education and training in requirements engineering and to achieve a broad improvement in the daily requirements engineering practice. Professional requirements engineering contributes to eliminate errors in the analysis. It describes a systematic path from project idea and goals to a complete set of requirements. In addition, quality characteristics are defined, which need to be met by every single requirement as well as the entire requirements specification.

With the book, an independent preparation for the certification exam is possible. It can also be used as an accompaniment to one of the training courses offered by a training provider.

The "Foundation Level" certificate confirms that the person is familiar with the terminology of requirements engineering and management and is able to apply the basic techniques and methods of requirements engineering. Visit the official website of the IREB e.V.  to learn more about the certification standard.
